Northern Lights Winter Pine Tree Line

Hi, Friends! This is Caly and I’m here to share a tri-fold card with you using this month’s add-on, the Tri-fold Edge Winter Pine Fancy Dies. It’s exactly as it implies – the dies are made to help you cut your three panels for a tri-fold card. Super straight forward and easy. There are a few ways to create your tri-fold card depending on how long your cardstock is. I’ve created mine today with 2 A2-sized side-folding card bases. I folded each in half and overlapped to create a center.

Using the dies, I laid out where I wanted my trees to sit and then temporarily held them in place with Purple Tape. Then I did partial die-cutting up to the score portion of the each card base. Some cutting may be required to get clean lines for each panel.

To create the background, you want to use the panel that still has a full background. I used some Purple Tape to mask off the die-cut pine to ensure it stayed clean. I wanted to create a Northern Lights look, so I chose a few bright Distress Oxide Ink colors as well as some darker ones to ink-blend my colors. I started with Peacock Feathers and used the side of my dauber and flicked upward as I blended to create the streaks and lines. Then I did the same with Mermaid Lagoon and Wilted Violet, stacking the colors as I went. Finally, I added Blueprint Sketch to fill in the white areas, then added black soon to darken the sky. My final step was to add white paint splatters to add stars to the sky.

While my background dried, I added some snow to my hillside and pine. For the hillside, I used a B0000 Copic marker, then blended it into the natural white of the cardstock using a 0 marker. For the pines, I decided to add snow using Crystal Clear Lacquer and White Detail Embossing Powder. I wanted a subtle look, but if you want a dramatic look, you could create a more puffy snow look using Puff Embossing Powder. Hero Arts sells a Snow and Froth Kit that includes both to make it super easy for you! All you do is lay down the Crystal Clear Lacquer, add embossing powder and heat set – the heat causes the lacquer to melt in its place and activate the embossing powder.

When the paint splatters on my background dried, I sealed in all the color with Distress Micro Glaze – this makes the surface waterproof (what you can seal written and decorated envelopes with) but also enhances the color of Reactive Inks. At this point, I adhered my panels together to create my tri-fold card. To finish, I used a stamp from the Wonder and Magic of Christmas stamp set. Some masking was required to use one stamp on three different panels but it was easy enough!
