DIY Halloween Felt Pillow with Felt Stitch & Create Dies

Hi there! It’s Andrea Shell here, and I’m thrilled to be back as a guest on the Spellbinders’ blog! Today I’m sharing a step-by-step, photo tutorial featuring the new Halloween Felt Stitch & Create Etched Dies by Nichol Spohr. These dies make the cutest Halloween felt décor items, but would also work great for a papercraft project.

I chose to use the Halloween Felt Stitch & Create Dies to make a pillow. These dies would also make adorable 3D felt ornaments to embellish a wreath and the like.

Diecut wool felt with the Spellbinders Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine and the Halloween Felt Stitch & Create Etched Dies. Before assembly, be sure to remove all negative bits from the stitching holes to make sewing easier.

Assembling the Felt Appliques

Place the band on the witch’s hat and align the holes on the ends of the band with the holes on the sides of the hat. Using 3 strands of coordinating embroidery floss, sew the band in place with a running stitch from one end of the band to the other. When you get to the end of the band, come back through the same line of stitch marks, filling in the empty holes. Repeat for the other line of stitch marks on the band.

Add the crescent moon and large patch (from the ghost dies) to the witch’s hat using 3 strands of coordinating embroidery floss and the same running-stitch technique used to attach the band.

Align the ears, nose, and arches for the cat’s face to the corresponding holes on the cat diecut. Use 3 strands of coordinating embroidery floss and the running-stitch technique to attach the pieces to the cat diecut. In the same manner, sew the triangles onto the arches of the cat’s face.

Place the mouth onto the cat diecut with the holes aligned. Attach the mouth to the cat with 3 strands of coordinating embroidery floss and the running-stitch technique. With 3 strands of black thread, stitch the remaining holes in the mouth.

With 3 strands of white embroidery floss, use long stitches to create whiskers for the cat.

For the shoelaces, use 6 strands of black embroidery floss and a running stitch in the zig-zag holes of the boot. Attach the heart and fringe (flower diecut from the witch’s boot dies) to the boot with 3 strands of coordinating floss and the running-stitch technique. Add a felt button to the heart with 3 strands of yellow floss. Sew a length of black floss (6 strands) to the boot and tie a bow.

Sewing the Pillow

Pin the felt appliques to fabric and sew in place using 3 strands of coordinating floss and a whip stitch. To attach the stars, use the running-stitch technique.

NOTE: Prior to attaching my appliques, I applied an iron-on interfacing to the wrong side of my fabric to give it more stability.

After the appliques are attached, sew the desired trim (black fringe on my pillow) to the pillow front.

With right sides facing, sew the pillow back to the appliqued front, leaving a large opening at the bottom to stuff the pillow. Trim the corners and turn the pillow right side out. If using fringe trim, remove the basting from the ends of the fringe and fluff as needed.

Insert the pillow form or desired stuffing into the opening. Pin the opening and stitch closed.
